On Thursday April 20th around 1400 hours, BRFD and surrounding departments were dispatched to the intersection of US Route 220N and Bedford Road on box F0305H for a MVC with injuries. Engine 32, already on the street was clearing a box alarm in Lavale and responded from the scene with a crew of 3. Rescue Squad 3 responded from quarters with a crew of 3 shortly after. Rescue Squad 3, first arriving, reported a 2 vehicle accident, 1 off the roadway and 1 on its side in the intersection. Rescue Squad 3 upon investigation found multiple trapped, 1 in vehicle 1 (Vehicle off the roadway) and 2 in vehicle 2 (vehicle on its side). The Rescue Squad determined the severity of injuries and began working to extricate the driver of vehicle 1, Engine 32 arrived and split crews and assisted the Rescue Company with completing the extrication of vehicle 1 and the rest of the crew began working on a tie-back system off the front of Engine 32 to stabilize vehicle 2 to “flap the roof” & remove both patients. Both companies performed the extrications in under 15 minutes of arrival utilizing our HURST jaws of life hydraulic tools. Engine 41 (Baltimore Pike) assisted with the extrication of vehicle 2. Medic units from Cumberland City, and County EMS units from Flintstone and Corriganville transported patients to UPMC Cumberland. Engine 1 (Cumberland City) responded & assisted briefly on scene with patient removal from vehicle 2 & Rescue Squad 2 (Lavale) also responded to the incident but was cancelled prior to arrival.
